Luigi Pira

Giampaolo Pira's Barolos are rich and intense to the core. Sometimes that approach, and sometimes the results are more mixed. But when the wines are on, they can be absolutely thrilling, as was the case with a recent bottle of the 2005 Barolo Marenca. The Vigna Rionda, on the other hand, is too often marked by French oak, when, as a site of delicacy and finesse, it almost certainly needs more of a kiss than a punch.
