Lorenzo Begali
This small family run estate produces roughly 100,000 bottles a year with six different wines, depending on the vintage. For example, in the rain-plagued 2014 vintage, those numbers were down to 40,000 and four wines respectively. Begali makes very smooth, easily accessible Amarones that are not the powerhouses you’ll taste elsewhere; interestingly, there’s not much Corvinone in the Amarone Classico blend, while there is a lot more of it in Begali’s cru Amarone Ca’ Bianca; the latter is a single vineyard that naturally curtails Corvinone’s tendency to be a copious yielder. Begali told me he believes his 2013 Amarones to be more elegant than those of 2012 (a hotter year), in which he reduced the total air-drying time to eighty days from the usual ninety, in an effort to make a less thick, opulent wine. The estate owns some marvelous vineyards, most notably those in San Giorgio’s Conca d’Oro plot, beautiful old pergola-trained fifty year old vines.
