Lassègue
Jess Jackson, founder of Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, purchased this 24.5-hectare property during the summer of 2003 with winemaker Pierre Seillan, who is also winemaster for Bordeaux reds within the Jackson-Banke family's Artisans & Estates portfolio in California and makes the wines under the Verite label. It looks like Jackson and Seillan have made a good investment: although the old Lassegue wines were not very good, there are nine distinct soil types on this mostly southwest-facing property about a mile east of Chateau Pavie, and the vines, mostly between 35 and 45 years of age, are in good condition. Under the direction of Seillan, the farming of the property has changed completely. In time for the 2004 harvest, for example, Seillan installed a number of small stainless steel tanks that permit much more precise harvesting by parcel. Following a five-day cold soak and a fermentation of about a week, Seillan did a full three weeks of post-fermentation maceration. The encepagement here is 60% merlot, 35% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon, and the harvest in 2004 took place between September 30 and October 21. Although Seillan made the 2003 vintage here, 2004 is the first year that the new owners had control of the vines during the entire growing season.
