Peter Geiben had some striking successes in 2003, particularly at the dry end of the spectrum. Geiben began picking in late September to guarantee that there would be some "genuine Kabinett" and delivered on the promise. With all the credit due him, Geiben would be the first to point out that the numerous springs on his hillsides, particularly in Mauerchen, helped stave off summer shut-down and ensure complete maturation, even in his early harvested fruit. Upper-Pradikatbottlings do not represent the strongest part of Geiben's 2003 range, as he had neither ideal botrytis nor the deep frost on which he often relies for show-stopping nobly sweet results. This year's BA was imposingly rich but rather soft and undifferentiated, while the combination of phenolics and acidity exhibited by the single Eiswein generated a slightly metallic, drying cast, at least on my palate. Incidentally, Geiben has redesigned his label to give his family name prominence over that of the estate.
