Fritz Salomon - Gut Oberstockstall

Fritz Salomon (nephew of Undhof director Bert Salomon) continues to turn out frequently fascinating wines from the Undhof’s ancient Wagram counterpart, fearlessly flirting with long, low-sulfur élevage that occasionally backfires, as in the case of a 2013 Grüner Veltliner Brunnberg that seemed promising from tank but has proven awkwardly milky and yogurt-like from bottle. Grüner Veltliner is always the standout in these loess-dominated soils. “You had to have patience this year, even with the material you wanted to pick for light wines,” noted Salomon of 2013, and he certainly got delectably ripe flavors at the lower end of his Grüner Veltliner portfolio. I also needed patience to properly assess the Gut Oberstockstall 2013s, several of which were considerably more impressive when retasted this September than they had been in their youth. Picking began in mid-October and Salomon reports that his fruit from all varieties remained botrytis-free.
