Domaine Vernay

In 2018 the northern sector of the region, meaning upper Saint-Joseph and Côte-Rôtie, suffered less from the drought, heat and mildew issues that slammed their neighbors to the south, Christine Vernay told me. Old vines were able to produce fresher fruit, and fortunately for this domaine, they have a lot of them. “There was true phenologic ripeness but not really to the point where there’s confit character to the wines, happily,” Vernay said, adding that she thinks it’s a vintage that is built to reward some patience “because you don’t really have to worry about the fruit drying out.” Two thousand seventeen was also marked by a hot growing season, which gave ripe fruit and small, thick-skinned berries that produced wines that Vernay thinks “will age quite well, if not requiring as much patience as the 2015s.” Note that the name of this historic estate has changed from "Domaine Georges Vernay" to simply "Domaine Vernay."
