The 2016 vintage played smoothly into Isabel Ferrando’s style, she said, citing the cleanliness of the fruit and its “richness and energy combination.” Ferrando has been steadily (“carefully”, she added) increasing the use of whole clusters at her 24-hectare estate because she likes the exotic perfume they bring to her wines, as well as the added benefit of reducing alcohol levels. Stem ripeness is never really an issue in this climate, she pointed out, but one does need to be watchful that their character doesn’t overwhelm the wines’ fruit or bring an unwanted increase in tannins. Along with the 2015s, this is the most impressive group of wines that I’ve yet had from Ferrando.
