Domaine Jean-Michel Gerin

Gerin told me he produced an average of 19 hectoliters per hectare in 2003, as his vines were affected by every conceivable weather event:spring frost, a "mini-tornado" in June, hail, and the August canicule. Still, Gerin harvested beginning on August 21 because he wanted to keep a decent level of acidity, and he did not want to make "a southern style of 2003. Gerin used nearly 100% oak for his 2003s, as he orders his barrels in advance and brought in much less crop than he anticipated earlier in the growing season. Gerin compares 2003 to other hot years like 1983 and 1976. "I have no idea what the wines will be like in five years," he admits. Gerin is especially proud of his 2002s, and was critical of publications that wrote off this vintage virtually at the time of the harvest. He carried out a severe selection in the vines and harvested very quickly, using a large team of pickers. He did a rather energetic extraction, raising the temperature of the must to 37oC at the end of the fermentation to do another 18 days of maceration-for a total of five weeks on the skins. The index of polyphenols rose right through the end of the maceration, Gerin noted. The sugars were in the low 10. 3%-11% range in 2002, and Gerin chaptalized his Cote-Roties by the full allowable 2 degrees.
