Diamond Creek Vineyards
This was my first visit to Diamond Creek following the passing of Boots Brounstein earlier in the year. Boots - as she was known to everyone - lit up any room she entered. Her enthusiasm was truly infectious. It goes without saying she will be deeply missed. I tasted the 2016s with her son Phil Ross, who runs the estate, and longtime winemaker Phil Steinschriber. As always, Diamond Creek releases their wines a year or so later than most estates. Ross describes 2016 as a long growing season and the first year following the end of a prolonged drought cycle. In tasting the wines, I was quite struck by how lush and big they are. To be sure, the current Diamond Creek Cabernets are much more contemporary in style than the wines of the 1970s that made the estate's reputation. Even so, the oak seems especially notable in the 2016s. All of the Cabernets are aged in 100% new oak. Some lots are moved into new barrels again for the second year of aging, which is why some of these reviews refer to the wines as seeing 120% new oak.
