Dehlinger

Tom Dehlinger describes 2001 as "close to an ideal vintage." The year featured a dry spring, which Dehlinger noted is a predictor of smaller berries and a more concentrated crop. The second half of the growing season was then on the cool side, without any extreme heat, right up to the pinot noir harvest. In fact, I cannot recall a more consistently successful, scented set of pinots at this address. In the past, I have occasionally described these wines as pinot noirs made in a syrah style, but not in 2001.(Incidentally, Dehlinger is phasing out the 500-liter puncheons in which he aged his pinots before his recent cellar expansion; with vintage 2003, these wines will be aged entirely in barriques Dehlinger, by the way, considers 2002 to be a very good year for the later-ripening varieties. Syrah, for example, was picked beginning on October 20, following two weeks of cool weather. Dehlinger still sells off about half of his fruit, mostly cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay from richer soils. Annual production is in the 7,000 to 8,000 range, with a good three-quarters of the output sold direct to mailing list customers.
