Craggy Range
Since the early 1990s, the Australian-based, American-born owner Terry Peabody has made Craggy Range one of the most aspirational wine brands in New Zealand. The classy packaging, polished wines and slick cellar door experience in Hawke's Bay offer savory Syrah and prestige Cabernet/Merlots that might benefit from a less zealous oak regimen. In 2019 the winery introduced Julian Grounds as the new winemaker, who has provided a gentler approach to the reds, creating more terroir-driven, less “made” expressions; this is a welcome change. The Martinborough vineyards on the challenging Te Muna Road invariably impress, particularly the flagship Aroha cuvée, often with a high percentage of whole bunches.
