Cordero di Montezemolo, one of Barolo's historic estates, continues their streak of impressive vintages with these gorgeous 2011s. In this vintage, the wines are defined by their high sugars and equally high acid levels, an unusual combination, to say the least. The 2011s spent 15-18 days on the skins. The Monfalletto, which is all Gattera fruit, is aged mostly in cask, while the single-vineyard Barolos are aged exclusively in French oak. Cordero is among the producers who favor shorter aging regimes for Barolo. The single-vineyard Barolos spent 18 months in oak, the minimum required by law, while the Monfalletto was in steel awaiting imminent bottling when I tasted it in July 2014.
