Rosé Revolution: Light Red is the New Pink

Rosé’s future looks redder, more serious and more satisfying than ever. The growing movement of bolder, ageworthy wines from far-flung locales is making it clear that Rosé isn’t just a season, it’s a category with staying power.

The Diverse Villages of Rioja: A New Trend Emerges

Rioja is changing. One of the most important factors in that change is the increased prominence of small and mid-sized producers and their interpretations of Rioja as village, vineyard or parcel wines. These wines stand in stark contrast to the region’s historically blended wines, and yet they may also represent the most promising future for Spain’s most famous winegrowing region.

Cellar Favorite: 2022 António Madeira Branco Vinhas Velhas

On a recent return to Solar dos Presuntos, Lisbon’s go-to restaurant for any wine-lover, I ordered Madeira’s 2022 Branco Vinhas Velhas. Our sommelier grinned, knowing the treat in store. I was blown away.

Vinous Table: Henry’s End, Brooklyn, New York

The phrase "neighbourhood institution" connotes a restaurant where passionate, talented chefs with attention to detail have sustained it through the years, a restaurant that stands as a beacon of quality. Henry's End might have opened over half a century ago, but standards remain high and people still love it.

At a point when savvy wine consumers are seeking value for their money, there has never been a better time to get into Beaujolais. This report takes a look at new releases, mainly from the 2023 vintage, the best of which demonstrate the underestimated heights these wines can reach.

The Brutal Beauty of Sardinia: The 2022 and 2023 Vintages

Sardinia continues to thrive despite a climate that is searingly hot and incredibly dry. Navigating the region isn’t easy, as the island can seem like a continent due to its size, but the effort is certainly rewarding. Between its compelling native varieties, diverse terroir and high concentration of skilled winemakers, Sardinia is positioned for greatness.

2025 Champagne: New Releases

My annual March trip to Champagne is always one the highlights of the year. Many producers are preparing to launch their new releases. At the larger houses, this is the time when winemakers are finalizing their blends and deciding whether or not they are going to bottle their tête de cuvées. With spring around the corner, thoughts start to turn to the young vintage and what it might bring. This year, things were different. Deep concerns about the global economy cast a pall on every tasting. That’s a shame, because Champagne continues to be one of the most dynamic regions in the world.

Alsace 2023: Astonishing Whites and Splendid Reds from a Complex Year

Dry, dry, dry. This is how Alsace growers remember the 2023 vintage. Sandy, gravelly sites on the plain suffered and stony slopes struggled, but sites with more water-retentive soils fared much better. In 2023, the Rieslings have concentration, moderate alcohol, ripe acidity and great aging potential. The stylistic spectrum of Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer is as broad and diverse as ever, while Pinot Noir is getting finer and finer.

New Zealand Whites: Never Gonna Give You Up

An island nation at the bottom of the earth renowned for its native flightless bird as well as "Flight of the Conchords," New Zealand has made a name for itself around the world for its light-filled interpretations of Sauvignon Blanc. As Marlborough looks back on half a century of Sauvignon, it seems the country has a complicated relationship with its star performer.

Behind the Red Curtain: Penfolds Special Bins from the Vault

Winemaker trials are key to the pursuit of exceptional wine. Small batches can allow creativity to flourish. The genesis of truly fine wine at Penfolds began in the 1940s with a program of wines that became known as Special Bins. A rare tasting of Penfolds Special Bins stretching back to the 1950s offered a glimpse deep into the historic past and showcased modern Australian benchmarks.

2022 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti: The Lightness of Being

I admit I approached the 2022s from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti with some trepidation. Given reports of extreme, record-setting warm and dry weather, I feared a repeat of 2020, a year in which the wines were unusually dark and concentrated. Those concerns were quickly allayed as soon as I started tasting the 2022s. The wines are absolutely brilliant. Elegant and poised, the 2022s are not only captivating, but they also offer that most elusive of all qualities in fine wine: the ability to convey the essence of site.

Cellar Favorite: 2022 Yquem

Head Winemaker Lorenzo Pasquini flew to the UK to present the latest vintage of Château Yquem. Meeting in central London, Italian-born Pasquini gave me the background on the 2022.

2023 Burgenland and Austria’s East: Gorgeous Reds, Aromatic Whites and Killer Sweets

The 2023 growing season kept winemakers in Austria’s east on their toes. Rain that had been so sorely missed in 2022 came in abundance, as did heat. However, a golden autumn ensured long ripening and yielded reds and whites with bright acidity and aromatic nuance. Producers who specialize in nobly sweet wines were able to pick concentrated fruit with super-clean botrytis. What’s more, Austria’s east was spared from frost and hail, as well as from the many flood events that did so much damage throughout Central and Eastern Europe.

The Vivacious Reds of Ribeira Sacra and El Bierzo

Ribeira Sacra and Bierzo share a climate and dominant red grape variety, and yet they produce two very different versions of Mencía. In this report, I survey over 300 wines to provide a comprehensive overview of the wine country that spans the mountains between Galicia and León.

Future Memories: DRC 2022 In Bottle

Much has been written about Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, but tasting the bottled 2022s recently, I thought about all the memories made whenever a bottle of DRC is opened…

A Place Beyond Praise: Bordeaux 2022

The bottled 2022 Bordeaux arrive at a critical point for the region. Whilst 2022 is not an infallible vintage—and this report pulls no punches—the highs are future legends. Now, if they can just get the prices right…

2022 Bordeaux in Bottle: Living in the Present

The 2022 Bordeaux elicited quite a bit of enthusiasm at the outset. That’s not surprising, given the challenges of the preceding 2021 harvest. The world and the wine market have changed quite a bit since then in so many ways. But the fundamental question remains: How are the 2022s now that they are in bottle? The short answer is that the very best 2022s are truly spectacular. But there is also some variability, as we will explore below.

Cellar Favorite: Château Latour 2025 New Releases

This year’s new releases from Château Latour are especially strong as they span three important vintages, each of which has something to offer. I tasted the wines with Estate Director Hélène Genin during a visit to the château in December 2024.

It’s that time of year. New releases from Sonoma County and neighboring appellations are starting to hit the market. Readers can also look forward to a forthcoming report focused on the Moon Mountain AVA, where the wines are quite distinct from those made in the more central regions within Sonoma County.

Napa Valley’s 2022 & 2023 Cabernet Sauvignons

Napa Valley is very clearly at an inflection point of tremendous change on many levels. Shifting consumer preferences, vintages with markedly different and at times challenging conditions, and an evolving market are all topics that are front and center in any discussion of Napa Valley today. “May you live in interesting times,” the ancient proverb says. These are definitely interesting times. My annual report covers the bottled 2022 Cabernet Sauvignons and the nascent 2023s from barrel.

New Releases from the Tuscan Maremma

My annual report on the Tuscan Maremma takes an in-depth look at wines produced along a vast swath of land on the coast that stretches more than 100 miles (160 kilometers), starting in Grosseto and moving north all the way to Pisa. This expansive region encompasses numerous appellations, each of them quite distinctive. Overall, I was very impressed with the quality of what I tasted.

My ears perk up with excitement when I hear of cool, extended growing seasons in any region. So, how did Washington State producers fare in the idiosyncratic 2022 vintage? Success wasn’t easy to come by, but it also wasn’t unattainable.

Uco Valley: The Age of High-Elevation Reds

The high-elevation vineyards of the Uco Valley are turning out red wines that continue to redefine what we once knew from Argentina. Lighter reds, shaped by the cold and sunshine, showcase a stylistic renaissance in the glass.
