Countdown #40 to #21...

#40: 2021 Garage Wine Co. Carignan VIGNO

$95, Maule, Chile

JH: “A small producer focused on developing high-quality Cariñenas from Chile, VIGNO is one of those initiatives that absolutely deserves your attention.”

The 2021 Carignan VIGNO originates from Empedrado in the Maule Region. Sourced from a cold area in a chilly year, it was aged for two winters in new French oak barrels. Garnet in hue, it presents nuanced, subtle aromas of pomegranate, cherry and herbs, complemented by notes of cotton candy, white pepper, earth and oak. Dry, lean and silky, with a compact and refreshing mouthfeel, this Carignan delivers a wild yet balanced palate. It stands out as a rare and expressive VIGNO, offering an unusual flavor profile that lingers long. Simply delicious.

97 points Joaquín Hidalgo, July 2024

Technical Director Vincent Millet and his team turned out a stunning set of wines at Calon-Ségur. The Grand Vin is majestic in 2021.

#39: 2021 Château Calon Ségur

$125, Bordeaux, France

AG: Calon Ségur is one of the standouts from Bordeaux’s irregular 2021 vintage. The team led by Technical Director Vincent Millet turned out a super-classic Saint-Estèphe that delivers superb intensity and tons of character. Best of all, Calon Ségur remains a very fine value in the world of top-flight wine.”

A Saint-Estèphe of stature and vertical intensity, the 2021 Calon Ségur dazzles from the very first taste. Spice, menthol, licorice, black cherry, mint and espresso are some of the many notes that build with a bit of coaxing. The 2021 clocks in at a modest 12.9% in alcohol, yet it possesses tremendous density and textural resonance. What a wine!

97 points – Antonio Galloni, December 2023

#38: 2020 Domaine A. Clape Cornas
