Domaine Duroché
Latricières-Chambertin 1989-2022

Following
an epic <a target="_blank" href="https://vinous.com/articles/burgundy-focus-1-duroche-s-clos-de-beze-grand-cru-1988-2020-apr-2023">Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze vertical</a> two years ago, the same Duroché
fan, Phil Clarke, organised a similar tasting that shifted attention towards
another of the Domaine’s Grand Crus: Latricières Chambertin.<img alt="" src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/images.vinous.com/uploads%2F1755184287111-1989+Latricieres.png">Gilles
Duroché debuted his Latricières-Chambertin in 1989, now an extremely rare
bottle that Duroché’s son, Pierre, presented blind at this vertical. This
bottle was purchased from a family in Morey-Saint-Denis, though Pierre Duroché
did not specify their identity. Pierre did mention that the vines had
been planted in 1949. The 0.27-hectare plot is located at the vineyard’s northern
extremity abutting Chambertin, where the land is a little flatter. “It is
slightly warmer here because there are more stones,” Duroché explained. “This
tends to give the wine more mineralité and elegance. But it is also more
humid, so it is prone to frost. We were affected twice in 2016, when we
produced one barrel instead of three. So, we bottled only in magnum.” The first
vintage where Pierre Duroché had complete responsibility at the domaine was
2013.

Like
before, this vertical confirmed Pierre Duroché’s skill in articulating his
holdings with utmost transparency. For sure, the best vintages tend towards the
most recent as he refines his technique —frankly, there is not a weak vintage
from 2015 onwards. If this tasting proved anything, it is that although Duroché’s
father never gained the kudos that Pierre has, Gilles Duroché certainly knew
how to make a great wine. His maiden 1989 defied all expectations, whilst the
2002 and 2010 are both excellent.

small quantities produced, Duroché’s wines are highly sought after. This
tasting demonstrated their ability to repay cellaring, even if I find them some
of the most approachable in Gevrey-Chambertin. 

So, the
only outstanding question is, which of Duroché’s vineyards can we do next?
