The 1997&nbsp;Riesling Abtsberg
Auslese Nr. 57 from Maximin Grünhaus – von Schubert was actually
served at a private dinner after the 1963 Blue Nun that spawned an interesting
<a target="_blank" href="https://vinous.com/articles/blue-nun-the-wine-at-the-center-of-everything-jul-2025">standalone article</a>, published here last week. However, in terms of
quality, the Nr. 57 was the real deal. After 28 years, the 1997 only shows
slight evolution in colour, though I did notice the thick tears in the glass.
The bouquet is pure heaven: candied orange peel, quince, light linseed scents
and just a very subtle brioche tincture. The delineation is spectacular. The
palate follows suit with a slight viscosity in texture and a perfect silver
thread of acidity that imbues this Auslese with energy, frisson. So pure and
harmonious, this Riesling seems to shimmer through to the crystalline finish.
You feel as if the bottle could not possibly improve with further cellaring,
though it will cruise at this high level of quality for many years. 98/Drink
