This is another impressive set of wines from Russell Bevan and Victoria De Crescenzo. In what seems like a very short time, Bevan and De Crescenzo have put together a formidable collection of Cabernets from top sites in Napa Valley and Sonoma, including several super-choice parcels. Last year, Bevan and De Crescenzo purchased the Saunders vineyard in Oakville. As if that weren't enough, a new winery at Tench is their newest project. As always, the Bevan wines showcase the opulent, flamboyant side of Napa Valley.

Russell Bevan dealt with a very challenging set of circumstances in 2022. Ultimately, Bevan bottled only a few of his wines, as the rest were casualties of the vintage. The 2023s, on the other hand, are special wines that show Bevan at his best. Readers will also want to check out Westbound, Bevan's new sparkling wine project, covered here separately.

Russell Bevan presented only his bottled 2021s this year. It was great to revisit those wines, as they capture all the potential I sensed when I saw them in barrel last year. Bevan is never one to hold back and is pretty clear about the challenges of the 2022 harvest. At least some of the wines will not be bottled, so Bevan fans will want to focus on 2021s.

Russell Bevan made some of the most striking wines I have tasted here. The 2021s are fresh, vibrant and sizzling with energy, yet they have all the flamboyance Bevan fans have come to expect. A number of the 2021s are especially fine. Sadly, there are no 2020s.

Russell Bevan presented a bevy of wines during our most recent tasting, all of them in the sumptuous, racy style he excels with. As always, I prefer the wines from sites that offer something to play off the opulence Bevan prizes, as those wines strike me as the most complete. Once again, I was super-impressed with Ontogeny, which is a great choice for readers on a budget. A few wines in the range were missing from my tasting, but I hope to add them to this report shortly.

This is a stellar set of wines from Russell Bevan and Victoria De Crescenzo. Bevan now sources fruit from a mind-boggling range of prime vineyards. In 2015, the freakish nature of the vintage has attenuated some of the differences between those sites, while the 2016s are much more delineated and expressive of place. All that is to say the 2015s and 2016s are highly representative of their respective vintages. As always, the Bevan wines are intense and flamboyant, even if they are not quite as over the top as they were in the early days.

It's hit after hit with these new releases from Russell Bevan and Victoria De Crescenzo, who have put together a stellar set of sites, including their new estate parcel, Saunders, in Oakville. As always, the Bevan wines are opulent and intense, with tons of immediacy and voluptuousness to burn. Personally I am drawn most to the Oakville Cabernets, but it's hard to go wrong with any of these wines, including the entry-level Ontogeny, which showed beautifully even when placed in the middle of all of the single vineyard wines.

Russell Bevan and his longtime partner Victoria De Crescenzo were in high spirits when I stopped by their Santa Rosa winery in January. Earlier that day, Bevan and De Crescenzo closed on the purchased of the Saunders Vineyard in Oakville, which gives them an additional 15-20 acres of top quality vineyard land, capping off an extraordinary run that only started a decade ago. Just as importantly, Bevan's winemaking has evolved pretty dramatically over the last few years. Bevan has always sought textural richness, but at times his wines were over extracted. Today, the wines are just as opulent as they have always been, but they are also significantly more polished. I tasted a number of Sonoma and Napa wines together, but Bevan opted only to show wines from sites he is confident he will have access to in the future rather than the entire range.

I caught Russell Bevan and his partner, Victoria DeCrescenzo, at the tail of the harvest and was only able to taste a few of their wines. I will report on the rest of the collection early next year. Bevan did a great job with his 2011s, especially in giving them much of the textural richness that is typical of these wines, no small feat in 2011. Vintage 2012 is much more up Bevan's alley in terms of providing better raw materials to make the wines he likes. I suspect much the same will be true of 2013. Savvy readers will note the presence of two new wines in this range, both from top sites, which I am sure goes a long way towards making up for the loss of Showket in the range.
