I can think of no better example of single-vineyard, terroir-driven Cerasuolo di Vittoria than those made by Paolo Calì. Each year, I marvel at the distinct characteristics of the wines in his range. The Niscia and Pruvuletta are both sourced from sandy soils and refined in cocciopesto amphorae. However, the Niscia soils contain more marine fossils and limestone, while the Pruvuletta soils are essentially sand dunes. Both wines show amazing tension and lift with depths of minerality. The Forfice is Cali’s classic interpretation of Cerasuolo di Vittoria from sandy clay. The grapes for Forfice macerate for up to 100 days, followed by refinement in neutral botti and amphorae. For a good example of the house style at a more affordable price, check out the Manene. You can’t go wrong with any of the 2022s, but be prepared to allow the single-vineyard wines to mellow through at least another year of cellaring. As for the long-term potential, I’d estimate these wines will continue to improve for at least a decade.
