One of the pioneering bodegas of the modern winemaking style in Rioja, Marqués de Cáceres hired the late, famed Bordeaux professor and consultant Emile Peynaud to oversee winemaking in 1970. That task is now in the hands of Michel Rolland, whose own fame and reputation far exceeds that of Peynaud. Those familiar with the Rolland style will see it in full effect here, especially at the high end, but I have never found the wines to be excessive in their ripeness or weight. On the contrary, this is new wave Rioja in an elegant style, with the wines showing lots of upfront appeal and supple texture, but with the concentration and balance to age.
