Da Romano is not just a restaurant, it’s an institution. Located on the colorful island of Burano, Da Romano offers wonderful Venetian cuisine, a solid wine list and extremely friendly, competent service, all in a historic, evocative setting.
Sunday lunch. I admit I don’t slow down and take the time to enjoy a leisurely meal over several hours as often as I should. This recent lunch La Ferme de la Ruchotte was a poignant reminder of just how enjoyable some of the simpler things in life can be.

It was an afternoon like no other: the theatre of Otto’s and Otto himself, the decadence of the food and this triptych of astonishing Pomerol. All of it would have been pointless without commensurate company, and the banter flowed as freely as the wine. How do we top this year’s lunch, I have absolutely no idea, but you can guarantee that however it transpires, it will be recounted here on Vinous Table.

This unforgettable evening was an auction lot built around an all-access pass to wines from my personal cellar paired with dinner donated by Saison that was sold at the most recent Festa del Barolo to support children’s pediatrics at the Mount Sinai Hospital. I would like to extend a huge ‘thank you!’ to our patrons for their extraordinary generosity. This dinner raised $55,000, 100% of which went to charity.

This is an institution that goes about its business in discreet fashion, doing what it has done for decades: serving delicious seafood and providing a memorable evening out.

A much-loved Montréal classic, L’Express is one of the most authentic and best French food bistros you are ever likely to find outside of France. It boasts a lively, jovial atmosphere and a wine list with over 11,000 bottles, many of them available at very fair prices.

If you are taking a vacation in Biarritz or Saint-Jean-de-Luz, make a reservation at Xaya. One mouthful is all it takes to understand why their tables are in such demand.

I looked forward to Zoko Moko more than any other restaurant during my time in the Pays Basque. Many had sung its praises, and eating out in Saint-Jean-de-Luz is always a pleasure.
Vinous Table, Italy: Center & South
Terrazza Bosquet is perhaps Sorrento’s most “in” restaurant at the moment. It boasts an amazing view in a gorgeous hotel that has been the haunt of many a famous name. An intimate menu and an excellent wine list make for a dining destination that tries hard to avoid falling into the tourist-trap cooking of similarly storied seaside hotels.

L’Embellie was thoroughly enjoyable. There are plenty of tourist restaurants in the center of Tours offering mediocre fare, but L’Embellie is a step above others in the vicinity.
